2026 REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR OUR 80TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON Click Here

First-Time Campers

Starting camp for the first time is a big milestone — for both campers and parents. From the bus ride to making friends to learning new routines, we work hard to help every new camper feel safe, supported, and excited from Day One.

First-Time Campers at Camp Robin Hood

About 75% of our campers are returning – and that matters for your child. From the moment they step off the bus on day one, they are joining a community where kids are eager to come back year after year. Soon they will know the songs, the routines, and the spirit of Robin Hood too.

Before Camp Starts

We take first-time campers seriously before the summer even begins. In the weeks leading up to camp, you will receive detailed communication covering everything your child needs to know – what to pack, how the bus works, what a typical day looks like, and who to call if you have questions.

We also host open houses before the season begins. These are hands-on events where your child can tour the campus, try activities, meet staff, and sit on an actual camp bus to get familiar with the bus experience, so nothing feels unfamiliar on the first morning. Dates are confirmed each spring and communicated to registered families.

For families who want to get a head start, our YouTube channel has a collection of videos covering camp songs, traditions, and what to expect, so that your child can arrive already knowing the words. Here’s an example of one of our most favourite Camp Robin Hood traditions, ‘Hands Are Strong’, which is what we sing with our arms crossed when we gather together as a camp at our Flagpole stage. Watch this video to learn more!

Your Child’s First Day

The first day is designed with new campers in mind: learning the layout, meeting the cabin group, getting comfortable with counsellors, and understanding the flow of a typical day. Our staff are trained to support this transition and will reach out to you if your child needs more support to adjust.

Your child will know their cabin group and counsellor names before they arrive. We send that information by email the week before their first session. Familiar names on an unfamiliar day make a real difference.

Cabin groups are small and age-based. For our youngest Munchie campers, there are three staff to every 12 children. Older groups have two staff to 12 to 16 campers. Every age group is also overseen by a Unit Head and a Division Head, members of our Supervisory Team. All of our Division Heads are qualified teachers during the school year, who monitor how new campers are settling in and follow up with families if needed.

Is My Child Ready?

For our youngest campers, Pre-Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten (or age four upon arrival to camp), this is the question we hear the most. Our honest answer is: call us. We would rather spend 10 minutes on the phone with you than have your child uncomfortable. Our Directors give personal recommendations and tours are available before the season begins.

Call us at 416-736-4443 or email office@camprobinhood.ca to speak with a Sari, Howie or Jordanna, our Directors.
