Inclusion Program

Camp is a powerful social experience for everyone.

A Tradition of Belonging

Camp is a powerful social experience for everyone. Camp Robin Hood was the first day camp in Canada to fully include children with special needs, a concept that was unheard of in our early years. This commitment grew from a natural desire to care for every child, and it remains one of our most gratifying traditions to see staff and campers of all abilities embrace each other’s differences. Our program provides the backdrop for campers to learn new skills and develop those that are emerging.

What Inclusion Looks Like at Camp

At Camp Robin Hood, inclusion isn’t just a policy—it’s an active practice where children learn to be empathetic and show respect. We strive to:

  • Include: Campers of all abilities into the heart of camp life to create a sense of belonging.

  • Enable: Equity, access, and full participation in every activity through trained staff and adaptive equipment.

  • Collaborate: Across teams, including co-counsellors, Unit Heads, Division Heads, activity specialists, and our Inclusion Team.

  • Reflect: On our own biases to ensure every interaction is supportive and perceptive.

  • Educate: Our entire community, campers and staff alike, on the value of an inclusive environment.

The 1:1 Support Role

The 1:1 role at CRH is highly individualized. While some campers benefit from an extra staff member in the cabin for occasional assistance, others require more dedicated support. Our standard camper-to-staff ratios involve staff sharing support equally; however, 1:1 support is available for campers who require more focused attention to get the most out of their experience.

How our 1:1 Staff assist campers:

Facilitating Social Connections: Helping campers navigate and build peer interactions.
Daily Living Support: Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as dressing, eating, and toileting.
Encouraging Participation: Providing the gentle push or modification needed to engage in camp activities.
Managing Energy & Regulation: Providing space for quiet time and scheduled breaks.
Safety & Guidance: Encouraging campers to stay with their group and re-directing focus when needed.
Transportation Support: Working with bus counsellors to ensure a smooth, safe ride and providing “Bus Buddies” to meet campers at arrival.
Personalized Care: Implementing the specific modifications and strategies shared by our Inclusion Team.

Our Leadership & Intake Process

Under the direction of Camp Owner/Director Sari Grossinger (a practicing paediatric Occupational Therapist), our program is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of inclusion.

The Intake Journey

To maintain the integrity of our program, we limit enrollment. Camp Robin Hood is a high-spirit, outdoor environment rather than a traditional therapeutic setting. To ensure a successful summer, our process includes:

  1. Consultation: Sari and the team often conduct home or school visits to assess if our camp is the right fit for your child.
  2. Assessment: Detailed discussions between camp, family, teachers, and other professionals.
  3. Confirmation: Spaces are limited, and confirmation is provided once the intake process is complete.

The staff was amazing with our son and with their support he fully integrated with his cabin and was a part of all the activities. The confidence he gained at camp this summer has now extended to three other NEW group participation experiences.
